On-premise servers, commonly referred to as “on-prem,” allow you to have full control of your infrastructure, they are cost-efficient and easy to spec to your needs.

Using an on-premise data centre is the traditional way of storing information for businesses. It involves purchasing and maintaining a number of servers to back up and store your information. By installing and running software on hardware located within your premises, IT staff have physical access to your data and can directly control the configuration, management and security of the computing infrastructure and data.

Cloud vs on-premise comparison

An on-premise data centre is an alternative to using cloud computing. There can be many reasons to choose an on-premise data centre instead of adopting a cloud-based solution.

Cost

The initial setup costs of an on-premise data centre are likely to be higher than an alternative cloud solution.  However, it is a one-off cost, leaving you free from subscription fees and ongoing costs, unless you opt to pay for additional support.

Performance

A cloud solution is only as fast as your internet connection. By locating your servers on site, internal users can usually achieve much faster speeds than if they were accessing information via the internet. It’s also possible for external members of staff to access your internal servers if required, so it’s still an option if you have staff working off-site.

Control

Cloud computing involves trusting a third party with your data – while security is of paramount importance to then, you’ll always be safest controlling your own data.

On-premise vs SAAS software solutions

SAAS stands for software as service – a rapidly growing arm of cloud computing. Instead of installing software directly on your server or on individual machines, users access their software via the internet. Examples of SAAS solutions include Office 365, Adobe Creative Cloud and WebTrends On Demand.
